Second category, second individual winner. After celebrating Vanessa as best woman player of the world, all eyes are now on the “goals” and their faithful guardians. Season after season goalkeepers’ skills in modern futsal are gaining a vital and essential importance on the pitch, and the result of this process can be seen in a new generation of shining interpreters: who’s the best between them? For the very first time since the introduction (year 2003) of the dedicated category, we move to Italy in order to pay tribute to the impressive ”portiere” of Montesilvano and Italy, Stefano Mammarella, winner of the Best Goalkeeper of the World category for the UMBRO Futsal Awards 2011 - 12th Edition by Futsalplanet.com!
Low profile, high performances Since he was a young and promising keeper with Cus Chieti, Stefano Mammarella proved to have the right attitude to succeed. Always working away from spotlight he avoided to lost his chance for a brilliant futsal career on the italian and international stage (for sure helped in this purpose by the fact to be a goalkeeper rather than a field player). Montesilvano did the right choice in the summer of 2009 (years in which there were brazilian goleiros even in the italian national team), betting on the Mammarella’s talent. Reaching a bigger and stronger club nothing changed in the Mammarella way to live futsal: results and achievements came as a logic consequence. Part of the “deserved prizes” for this wise path came with the national title in season 09/10, but the absolute and definitive consecration belongs to the year 2011.
Azzurri wall, perfect start After playing some league rounds in the italian competition, the new year proposed to Mammarella the first big challenge: a trip to Slovenia in order to get a ticket for the Futsal Euro 2012 tournament set to start in Croatia at the end of this month. The Montesilvano’s goalie got out of bed with the right foot and results were brilliant. Ticket secured, 120 minutes played in Lasko and just one goal suffered by Aleksandrs Zukovs in the first game against Latvia. That seemed to be the dawn of a wonderful year.
Semifinal MVP and then the dream came true After missing the Cup final in early march (Montesilvano lost 1-0 to Lazio in the tournament semifinal), there were no doubts on the fact that the central point of Mammarella year was given by the continental experience with Montesilvano, in the final four of the UEFA Futsal Cup played in Almaty, Kazakhstan. And Stefano didn’t miss the chance to shine, or we’d better say... he was one of the absolute heroes of the tournament. His semifinal against the title holder Benfica was quite outstanding and crowned with a perfect shot for the third Montesilvano’s goal. Glory days were not over for the teatino player, as he closed his goal to Sporting as well, just conceding two Leităo goals when the destiny of the UEFA Futsal Cup final was already written in golden letters for the italian side.
Little disappointments, great saves Mammarella could not add more titles to his own showcase, reaching the league semifinals and then getting a second place with Italy in the three nations tournament held in Porec (taking part in the winning game over Croatia). Same destiny for the Elite Round of UEFA Futsal Cup (11/12 edition) but he definitely confirmed his status of top player collecting an impressive series of decisive saves, with special refer to the last game, the italian derby vs Marca Futsal (watch one sample at the bottom of the page!)
Italy glory again The best way to put the final seal on the year was given again by the nazionale, as Italy (following a total of 4 friendlies vs Portugal and Japan) hosted one of the Main Round groups of the UEFA Qualifiers for the Thailand World Cup 2012. Polish, Bulgarian and Romanian strikers could not overcome the Mammarella opposition: once again the italian goalie emerged as one of the main characters of the mini-tournament played in Caltanissetta, Italy. That was the end of the year, but just a chapter of a futsal career that will definitely count on more titles and prizes.
All those are arguments were the keys to choose Stefano Mammarella as the winner of the Best Goalkeeper of the World category for the UMBRO Futsal Awards 2011 - 12th Edition by Futsalplanet.com!!
