Bangkok: Regional powerhouse Thailand continued their dominance in the Asean Region after defeating Vietnam 9-4 in the Asean Football Federation (AFF) Futsal Championship on Friday.
With the win, Thailand will travel to UAE next month with sky-high confidence to feature in the AFC Futsal Championship 2012 which they have never managed to win. Thailand will face hosts UAE, Kyrgyzstan and Turkmenistan in Group A.
Thailand, the seven-time winners of the AFF Futsal Championship, were in total control of the match as they fired two goals in opening three minutes. They were 3-1 up in the half time and remaining six goals came in the second half in which Vietnam also scored three goals forcing coach Vic Hermans to show some concern over their defensive game.
“Our concentration level is not where it should be. Yes we can score goals but we also did not concentrate enough in defense. We let in soft goals,” the official website of AFF quoted Hermans who will be looking to work on the defensive strategy of the team in next 27 days before Thailand kickoff their AFC Futsal Championship campaign against Kyrgyzstan on 25 May.
Another AFC Futsal Championship representative from the region Indonesia had a dismal campaign after losing the semifinal 5-3 to Vietnam but they managed to win the third-place play off against Malaysia 4-2.
The AFC Futsal Championship 2012 will begin on 25 May involving sixteen countries in Dubai, UAE. The top four finishers of the championship will be qualified to feature in the FIFA World Futsal Championship to be held in Thailand later this year. By being the hosts, Thailand are already qualified and in case of Thailand finishing top four, the fifth ranked team will get the ticket to feature in the World Cup.
