The futsal coaches of New Caledonia have become the latest to benefit from the knowledge of FIFA Instructor Pierre Jacky, who completed his visit to Oceania by conducting a FIFA Level Two Futsal Coaching Course in the capital of Noumea this month.
The five-day course gathered nearly 30 participants from many parts of the country for a series of theoretical and practical sessions at the L'Arena Sud in the Paita suburb.
The aim was not only to raise the coaching abilities of the participants but also to provide them with an awareness of the current developments in futsal throughout the Oceania region and to assist the Fédération Calédonienne de Football (FCF) with its long-term development planning for futsal activities.
France national team coach Jacky, who arrived in Noumea after conducting a Level One course in Tahiti just days earlier, was impressed with the calibre of the participants and believes there is much potential for the indoor version of the world game to grow further in New Caledonia over the coming years.
"Some of the candidates are currently performing three or four functions in their communities, such as player, coach, referee and administrator," he says.
"They therefore have a wide range of futsal experience and very good knowledge."
Jacky was assisted in running the course by FCF futsal development officers Kamali Fitialeata and Phillipe Jiane while OFC was represented by futsal and beach soccer development officer Paul Toohey.
Toohey was likewise impressed with the skills of the participants and says everything is in place for futsal to have a big impact in the French territory.
"Both Pierre and I were hugely impressed with the facilities in Noumea," he says. "We have visited a number of outstanding venues and all are comparable with the kinds of multi-sports arenas you find in Europe."
Toohey was also pleased with the dedication of the FCF technical staff towards futsal and will look to provide the backing of OFC in their attempts to develop the sport.
"My role is to give support to Kamali and Phillipe to ensure they have everything they need to continue their excellent work and to help them plan for the next four to eight years," he says.
"Together, our task is to make futsal programmes as accessible as possible to the young football players of New Caledonia to complement their football activities and to assist with their technical development."
