Preceding the final was the 3rd Place Playoff between the local team Chonburi Bluewave and FC Barcelona. Things got off to a perfect start for the Thai side when a kick-in deflected off Adri Ortega into his own goal. However, it was only downhill from there for the 2017 Asian Champions.

They were incapable of handling Ferrao’s physical presence added to his collection of controls and turns. He got two goals in quick succession to put his team ahead. Escaping Chonburi’s pressing, a third came from Adolfo who was able to tap the ball in from Roger’s pass. Adri Ortega made up for his own goal when he scored from a corner and within seconds of the restart Joselito had stolen possession to add a fifth. Recent signing Boyis made it six before half-time.

Both teams doubled their tallies in the second half with goals coming from Lozano, another from Ferrao, two from Esquerdinha and Arthur for Barcelona and Thueanklang for Chonburi. The final result of 12-2 earned FC Barcelona 3rd place to match their finish in the previous edition.

The all-Brazilian final, a repeat of last time’s championship deciding match, saw Carlos Barbosa take on defending champions Magnus. Both teams defended strongly, and only the precise and quick distribution of the two goalkeepers was able to create chances for both teams in the early stages.

Magnus chose to form a compact defensive block in their own half and allow their opponents to control possession. It was a fairly even affair in terms of chances until just before half-time when Carlos Barbosa created a few excellent goal scoring opportunities only to be denied by Magnus’ Thiago in goal or, when he was beaten on one occasion, the frame of the goal. Half-time arrived without either team registering on the score sheet.

Magnus took advantage of the break to regroup and came out stronger. They missed from two excellent opportunities before a driving run from captain Rodrigo a few minutes after the restart set up Lino inside the area and he delivered the finish, as goalkeeper Gian hesitated, to make it 1-0. Carlos Barbosa pushed for the equaliser and were creating chances, including hitting the crossbar once, but in Thiago they faced one of the best goalkeepers of his generation in fine form.

They resorted to the fly goalkeeper to try to keep their dreams alive. However, they struggled to keep possession never mind create chances and, when Magnus stole the ball and looked certain to score, Bruno Sousza brought down Sacon. It was his second yellow card and with two and half minutes left he was sent off. Marcel, arguably the best player of the championships, took advantage of the numerical superiority to make it 2-0 with 1 minute 40 seconds left. Magnus hung on for the remainder and retained their status as the champions of the world to equal the number of titles won by their opponents. It could also be Falcao's last trophy with strong rumours he will end his glittering career at the end of the season.
