The ASEAN Football Federation has postponed this year’s AFF Futsal Championship to 2021.

The AFF originally planned to hold the tournament in November, but the federation’s competition committee decided to postpone the event to January 25-30, 2021, during a meeting last week.

“The host nation Thailand wants to hold the event in 2021 instead of November this year. They submitted a request to reschedule the tournament and this has been accepted by the AFF. So, our national team will have to compete in January 2021," said Myanmar Football Federation Secretary General U Ko Ko Thein.

Due to the postponement, Myanmar’s national futsal team under a new head coach will have more time to prepare for the competition, said Dr Ye Mon Htut, president of the Myanmar Futsal and Beach Soccer Committee.

Myanmar Futsal and Beach Soccer Committee appointed Netherlands coach Victor Hermans as the new coach of the national futsal team. Hermans had planned to select players for national team from a domestic tournament that had originally been planned this year.

Myanmar’s futsal team entered the 2019 AFF Futsal Championship and finished fourth after losing to Vietnam in the third-place play off for the tournament.

Myanmar’s best result in regional futsal was reaching the finals of the 2016 AFF Championship under coach U Htay Myint . The team lost 8-1 to Thailand to finish second.
